BURN RATE TESTING IN A PHYSICAL THERAPY CENTER WITH AN AT- HOME ONLINE WEIGHT MANAGEMENT PROGRAM

At Physical Therapy Center

The BurnRate2 Weight Management Program is designed to combine the medical technology of gas exchange measurement available at a physical therapy center with an at-home clinical program featuring an interactive web site and a nationally published book. The physical therapists (PT) at the center will provide testing of your metabolic rate and exercise tolerance with the use of the VO2000 medical equipment. The PT will enter your data into a personalized exercise monitor, the Digital Coach, and establish your personalized file on the web site to individualize your weight control plan to your burn rate. You can then use the exercise equipment to pace your workouts both at home and at the center to maximize either calorie expenditure for weight control or aerobic fitness for general health.

At Home

At home on your computer, you will be able to use the web site to monitor your energy intake and output and provide a simple personalized means to plan your food intake. Your individual file on the web site will store your personal burn rate information for future reference to plan lifelong weight control. Individualizing food intake is made simple by consulting with a dietitian on-line to develop meal plans using your food preferences to suit your personal burn rate requirements. For those wanting to do it themselves, computerized meal planning enables detailed planning of each meal by substrate to match your burn rate. This system for daily energy management enables the person to track their weight loss based on energy use instead of relying on inaccurate scale weights.
Program support is available on-line through the Support Network that features nutritional and psychological assistance via direct email to health professionals, on-line consultations, monthly newsletters and articles, and an active Bulletin Board. Plans for future development of the Support Network include wireless access to your menus and calorie information for meal planning while eating out, individualized nutritional databases for meal planning, and many other features.

The specific features of the system include the following:

  1. Burn Rate Testing using the VO2000 unit at the health club
  2. Exercise equipment, The Digital Coach
  3. A book, "The Burn Rate Diet" by Stephen R. Van Schoyck, Ph.D.
  4. A website, www.burnratediet.com

BURNRATE2 SYSTEM: DESCRIPTION

BurnRate1 and BurnRate2

Oxygen is more critical to weight control than either food or exercise. Metabolism or metabolic rate involves the use of oxygen to burn fuel. Metabolics is the individualized measurement of energy expenditure by evaluating the rate of oxygen consumption. You can calculate metabolic rate through the use of gas exchange that measures oxygen and carbon dioxide in your breath. This procedure is similar to auto emission testing with your car. Both glucose, the primary fuel of the body, and gasoline in a car require oxygen for burning. By measuring the gases that come out of the exhaust, your mechanic can tell how the engine is operating. Similarly, the gas content of your breath reflects the metabolic exchanges that are occurring in the body.

At rest, the burn rate of oxygen, BurnRate1, provides the means to calculate metabolic rate and the number of calories per day that your body requires for activities of daily living. Under exercise conditions, the burn rate of oxygen, BurnRate2, is an indicator of the capacity of the lungs to provide the oxygen that your muscles require. BurnRate2 will determine the intensity and duration of your workouts to maximize either the calories burned in a session or your aerobic conditioning for your sport.

BurnRate1 and Weight Control

Metabolism regulates energy use in the body and changes with body size and age. Metabolism accounts for almost 80% of your daily burn rate, your total daily energy or calorie expenditure. Metabolism is related to weight control by setting your burn rate at any given weight. The burn rate of oxygen decreases with decrease in body size. By mapping the change in your body?s burn rate with body size, you can select a body weight that matches a reasonable intake of food and a reasonable amount of exercise. By knowing your BurnRate1, science is brought to weight control to replace myth and magic, and increases your ability to succeed at lifelong weight control.

Knowing your BurnRate1 will help you:
  • Use science to select your goal weight
  • Create your nutritional plan for ideal appetite control
  • Lose weight using any diet
  • Eat normal food without guilt
  • Adapt your weight goals as you age

BurnRate2, Exercise and Weight Control

Your BurnRate2 data is entered into your personal workout equipment, The Digital Coach. This equipment matches your data on oxygen consumption to heart rate and monitors your heart rate relative to a prescribed range. You can use this information to pace yourself to maximally burn calories. Alternatively, using the Digital Coach, you can increase the intensity of your workout to increase your aerobic capacity. While this does not have a direct effect on weight control, the stress relief that occurs with a high intensity workout can reduce the amount of stress eating.

Knowing your BurnRate2 will help you:
  • Exercise safely at home or at the club
  • Increase the calories burned per workout
  • Prevent over-exercising
  • Improve your heart and lung fitness
  • Condition yourself for your specific sport
